Biography
Mahmoud Khalil is a legal permanent resident of the United States and a Columbia University graduate student who was detained by the Department of Homeland Security and targeted for deportation over his participation in protests against Israel's war on Gaza.
He was arrested at his university residence on March 8, 2025 and held in immigration detention in Jena, Louisiana. No criminal charge was ever brought against him; the government proceeded entirely through removal proceedings. He was released on bail by order of a federal court on June 19, 2025, after more than three months in custody, and his legal challenges continued after his release.
