Biography

Jesse F. Blakey was a conscientious objector from Arkansas imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 5 years in prison, reduced to 2 years. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: registered on June 5, 1917, as a C.O.; interviewed by Bd. on Feb. 14, 1919 at the Disciplinary Barracks ; charged with violation of 58th article of war; sentenced to 5 years in prison, reduced to 2 years
