Biography

Israel Amter was a veteran New York Communist leader — long the face of the Party's unemployed and street-organizing campaigns — who, at about seventy and in poor health, was among the seventeen 'second-string' Communist leaders arrested in New York on June 20, 1951 under the Smith Act.
