Biography
British-born film critic and journalist who co-founded the radical U.S. weekly National Guardian in 1948 with James Aronson and John T. McManus. Served in British Security Coordination in New York during WWII. Summoned by HUAC and the McCarran Subcommittee in 1953; invoked the Fifth Amendment. Deported under the McCarran Act on August 15, 1955; edited the National Guardian in exile from Mexico and Britain until 1967. Author of "The Frightened Giant" (1956).
