Biography

Herbert J. Phillips was a former University of Washington philosophy professor, fired in 1948, who was jailed for contempt during the Seattle Smith Act trial for refusing to name a fellow Communist as a defense witness. He was prosecuted during the McCarthy era amid the federal campaign against the Communist Party.
