Biography
James “Angry Bird” White is a Native American activist and member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe who became known for his participation in resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline protests in North Dakota. White was involved in protecting water and sacred sites as part of the #NoDAPL movement opposing the construction of the pipeline on Indigenous land. Federal prosecutors charged him and several other water protectors with offenses including civil disorder and related federal charges arising from protests in 2016. He entered a plea agreement in 2018, under which he received time served plus probation/home confinement rather than an extended prison sentence; other protesters in the broader case received varying terms of incarceration. White worked in security at the protest camps and has been described by supporters as part of Indigenous resistance to environmental harm.
