Biography

Eddie Hatcher was a Tuscarora activist whose most visible public action came in 1988, when he and others seized the offices of The Robesonian and held employees hostage for hours. The takeover was framed as a demand for attention to alleged corruption and racial injustice in Robeson County, including calls for action around high-profile violence affecting Native people.

Hatcher was convicted on state kidnapping charges and received a lengthy prison sentence, later being paroled in 1995. He was arrested again in 1999 and convicted in 2001 of first-degree murder in a drive-by shooting case, remaining incarcerated until his death in prison in 2009.
