Carl Haessler

Biography

Carl Haessler was a Rhodes Scholar and University of Illinois philosophy professor who joined the Socialist Party and refused to fight "for a capitalist country." Accepting induction but refusing the uniform, he was court-martialed and imprisoned at Fort Leavenworth and Alcatraz from June 1918 until a presidential pardon in August 1920. He was a leader of the January 1919 Fort Leavenworth prisoners' work strike and later a prominent labor journalist with the Federated Press.
