Biography

Asbury Howard was an international vice-president of the Mine, Mill & Smelter Workers Union and president of the Bessemer Voters League in Alabama. In January 1959 he was convicted for commissioning a billboard sign depicting a chained Negro praying for equal rights; fined $100 and given six months, he was beaten by a white mob as he left the courthouse and put on the Bessemer chain gang.
