Biography

The Rev. J. S. Phifer was an associate of Fred Shuttlesworth in the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights, tried with him in 1958 over the Birmingham bus-desegregation protest in which thirteen riders were jailed for refusing to move from the front seats. Phifer was fined $100 and given a 60-day sentence.
