Biography
Abraham L. Sugarman, from Mankato, Minnesota, was convicted of "obstructing military service" and sentenced to three years in prison. The State Secretary of the Socialist Party, he served in Leavenworth Penitentiary from April 25, 1919, to November 22, 1920. Sugarman contracted pulmonary tuberculosis and a "psoas abscess" in prison. Although the abscess was "incised and drained through the right groin, " it was "still discharging" pus after the operation.
