Biography
Verne Lester Kessler was a Church of the Brethren conscientious objector from Kansas imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: registered for draft in 1917; received notice to report to Ft. Riley on August 9, 1918; sent to Camp Funston (Ft.
