Biography

Ernest Hartzler Miller was a Mennonite conscientious objector from Kansas imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 25 years in prison. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: was from Virginia, but was farming in Kansas at the time of h is induction; sentenced to 25 years in prison; sent to Leavenworth on Dec. 9, 1918, and was there 18 days; went with the Near East Relief Committee in the Syria-Aleppo District in Nov. 1919 - Nov. 1921; courts-martial #123342
