Siddique Abdullah Hasan
Biography
Siddique Abdullah Hasan, born Carlos Sanders, is an Imam and an Ohio death row prisoner sentenced for his alleged role in the 1993 Lucasville Prison Uprising at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. The eleven-day uprising began on April 11, 1993 after escalating tensions between Muslim prisoners and prison administration over forced TB testing that violated Islamic medical practice; one prison guard and nine prisoners were killed. Hasan was charged with the murder of guard Robert Vallandingham and sentenced to death in 1996.
He has consistently maintained his innocence. He has been a leading spokesperson for the Lucasville defendants in the decades since, and was the central organizer of the 2011 and 2018 hunger strikes by Lucasville death-row prisoners that drew international attention. He has spent the past three decades in solitary confinement at the Ohio State Penitentiary supermax in Youngstown. His scheduled execution date is currently 2027.
