Biography
Santiago O'Leary was an officer of the San Patricio formation in the Mexican army during the Mexican-American War, reported as captain of the second company. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Churubusco on August 20, 1847.
CAPTURED SAN PATRICIOS RECEIVED MATERIALLY DIFFERENT OUTCOMES depending on whether they had enlisted in and deserted from the United States Army. The group's desertion charges, death sentences, brandings, whippings and terms of imprisonment therefore cannot be assigned to him individually without his court-martial record, and none is assigned here.
Whether he had enlisted in and deserted from the United States Army, his court-martial and sentencing dates, his individual sentence, his place of custody, his release, and his birth and death are all unresolved.
An earlier version of this record associated him with the CATHOLIC WORKER MOVEMENT. That movement was founded in 1933 and has nothing to do with this 1847 case; the association is removed.
