Biography

Sam Bonita, president of a progressive United Mine Workers local at Pittston in the Pennsylvania anthracite field, was one of three insurgent miners framed for the killing of Frank Agati, a gunman for the corrupt district president Rinaldo Cappellini, during the bitter 1927-28 anthracite union civil war. Convicted of manslaughter in April 1928, Bonita was sentenced to six to twelve years and sent to the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia; the ILD carried the defense.
