Biography

Russell A. Lantz was a Mennonite conscientious objector from Indiana imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 10 years in prison. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: sent to Camp Zachary Taylor; refused to wear uniform; was put under guard in barracks; was court-martialed in June 1918 for refusing order to spade the ground (which was so hard that it was nearly impossible to dig in it; just an excuse to find him guilty); …
