Biography

Earl I. Garber was a Mennonite conscientious objector from Indiana imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 10 years in prison. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: sent to Camp Zachary Taylor; in camp worked at k.p. duty; put in guardhouse on May 4th, where had to scrub floors 1-2 times a day; courts-martial trial occurred at Camp Zachary Taylor on May 31, 1918, for refusing to obey an order to rake grass in an area around the base hospital; …
