Rick Stanley Ogilvie Sheviakov was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi, on July 29, 1961, for participating in the Freedom Rides and challenging segregation in interstate transportation — one of the arrests recorded by the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission and preserved in the Civil Rights Digital Library. The catalog establishes the arrest, the participation, and the individually identified police photograph, but not the court disposition, any transfer to Parchman, or the physical release date; those fields are unresolved pending county-jail, court, or penitentiary records.
He spent nearly 45 days at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman after the arrest at the Jackson Greyhound station, with Byron Baer among his cellmates. His identification and Parchman correspondence are held by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
The arrest date is not settled. The catalog title says July 21, 1961 while the photograph's date-of-original field says July 29; the reading on record is that July 21 is the arrest and July 29 the processing of the image. This record keeps July 29 as it was entered and notes the conflict rather than silently moving it.
