Biography

June Johnson was a 15-year-old Greenwood, Mississippi SNCC volunteer when she was arrested on June 9, 1963 at the Winona Trailways bus station with Fannie Lou Hamer, Annell Ponder, and others returning from a citizenship workshop. Beaten by officers in Montgomery County jail despite her age — they struck her with blackjacks until her hair fell out — Johnson became a lifelong civil-rights organizer. She continued with SNCC and the MFDP through the 1964 Freedom Summer and Atlantic City convention, and served as a school board member and longtime activist in Washington, D.C.
