Biography

Ramsey Muñiz was a civil rights attorney and two time candidate for Texas Governor who received 6% of the popular vote while running under the Hispanic National United People's Party. In 1994 a Mexican business man contacted Muñiz asking him for legal services in representing his brother who had been charged with drug smuggling. Muñiz met the businessman at a motel which police records later showed had an undercover DEA informant occupying the room next to Muñiz. After arriving, the businessman asked Muñiz to return his rental car for him before discussing the case. Muñiz began driving the car and was immediately pulled over by DEA agents while leaving the parking lot. The agents discovered 90 pounds of cocaine in the trunk. The agents claimed the motel clerk had called the police to report the suspicious vehicle thus justifying the stop but the motel clerk later stated he never called 911 and records show no calls were made to police from the motel. The businessman who had rented the car was never arrested and it was later discovered he had gone to the DEA before contacting Muñiz to, "make a deal with them." In order to lessen the charges against his brother. Muñiz was convicted of being in possession of narcotics and given the maximum sentence of life without parole.
