Biography
Polychronis 'Paul' Paschalidis was the New York secretary of the Federation of Greek Maritime Unions, outlawed in Greece, held in U.S. immigration detention and ordered deported to Greece, where he faced imprisonment or death. After being brought within minutes of being put on a plane in June 1956, his attorney won a court stay, and he was allowed to depart instead for asylum in Poland in August 1956.
