Biography
Petros Moutsos was a young Greek seaman and member of the Federation of Greek Maritime Unions (outlawed in Greece) who walked off his ship in 1955 and married an American. Held for deportation under the McCarran-Walter Act on a charge resting largely on his refusal to discuss his political affiliations, he was secretly put aboard a plane to Greece in April 1957 but was rescued in Paris; the immigration board itself conceded his union membership 'might be punishable by death.'
