Biography
Peter Lumsdaine is associated with direct-action peace protest that sought to interrupt weapons development through symbolic damage and public accountability. In 1992 he was arrested in connection with an antiwar action at a defense facility tied to military satellite technology, where activists attempted to disable or damage components linked to the targeting and navigation systems used in modern warfare.
He and a co-defendant were prosecuted for the break-in and damage, and both ultimately entered guilty pleas that resulted in jail time. Lumsdaine’s activism narrative is typically framed around the idea that technologies marketed as “defensive” (such as precision navigation) materially enable offensive war-making, and that civil disobedience—and the arrests that follow—are used to force public scrutiny of that linkage.
