Biography

Payson Miller was a Mennonite conscientious objector from Indiana imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 10 years in prison. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: sent to Camp Zachary Taylo on March 29, 1918r; decided it was cowardly to accept non-combatant service; was court-martialed at Camp Zachary Taylor (KY) on May 31, 1918, for refusal to rake ground in preparation for planting grass seed within area occupied by the base hospital; …
