Biography

Paul Robeson — the Black singer, actor, and activist — was held in contempt by the House Un-American Activities Committee in June 1956 when, subpoenaed in its passport probe, he refused to say whether he was a Communist and turned the questioning back on the committee. He had been denied a passport for years because of his political views.
