Biography

Paul Alwyn Redd Jr. was an Oakland-born jailhouse lawyer, writer and prison organizer associated with the Short Corridor Collective. He participated in the movement against prolonged solitary confinement and was a plaintiff in Ashker v. Brown. His legal work helped other incarcerated people challenge prison conditions and classifications. He was released from prison in May 2020 after his murder conviction was reduced to manslaughter with credit for time served, and continued advocating for resentencing and prison reform. He died on June 19, 2022. Charges: Continued administrative segregation after a disputed 2011 gang-status review
Sentence: Redd’s sworn May 2013 declaration describes denial of inactive status in 2011 and continued confinement at Pelican Bay SHU. He said the review relied on political writings, George Jackson and Black Panther artwork, association evidence and disputed informant claims. He reported 33 of the previous 35 years in solitary, including a break from Pelican Bay between December 2000 and March 2001.
