Biography

Mutope Duguma, identified by CDCR as James Daren Crawford, is a New Afrikan writer and participant in California’s prisoner hunger-strike movement. He has argued that officials used his political beliefs to justify prolonged isolation under a gang classification he disputed. In June 2012, the California Court of Appeal upheld his right to send a political letter to the San Francisco Bay View; that decision concerned censorship and did not release him from prison. CDCR listed him at California State Prison, Los Angeles County on September 10, 2026. The case recorded here concerns segregation within his earlier criminal sentence.
