Biography

Max Sandin, a Russian-Jewish immigrant living in Cleveland, was a WWI absolutist who refused all military service. Court-martialed and originally sentenced to death, his sentence was commuted, and he was imprisoned at Fort Leavenworth before his release in 1920. A lifelong pacifist, he again refused to cooperate with conscription during World War II.
