Biography

Chris Hershberger was a Mennonite conscientious objector from Ohio imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 20 years in prison. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: refused to drill; sent to guardhouse; sentenced to 20 years in prison; sent to Leavenworth on Oct. 22, 1918; named on Judge Advocate General's file card entitled CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR: BURDEN OF PROOF: "The accused pleaded guilty to disobedience of an order to carry blankets. …
