Biography
Matthew Keys is a journalist and social media editor who in 2010 allegedly provided members of the hacktivist group Anonymous with credentials to the L.A Times website. The hackers made minor alterations to an articles headline which was reversed in less than 40 minutes. Keys asserts he had contacted Anonymous for journalistic reasons and after publishing a story on them which presented them in a positive light an unknown individual joined the hackers IRC group chat using his name and provided them with the login information. Despite the minor damage this vandalism caused, the case was aggressively pursued by the FBI who in spite of knowing the identity of the hacker who had actually made the changes to the site instead chose to solely target Keys. The L.A Times instructed a computer security contractor to overbill them thousands of dollars in fees for upgrading their security in order to allow prosecutors to charge Keys with a felony rather than a misdemeanor for the damage the hack caused. Keys was convicted and sentenced to 2 years in prison.
