Biography
Mary Jean Smith was a nineteen-year-old Tennessee State University student arrested in Jackson, Mississippi on May 28, 1961, after traveling by Greyhound from Nashville via Memphis as a Freedom Rider. Her birth year, about 1942, is derived from her reported age at arrest. The Civil Rights Digital Library identifies her individual mugshot — the photo caption supplies the fuller form Mary Jean Smith where the person heading reads Mary J. Smith — but does not establish her disposition or release, so those fields are unresolved.
