Biography

Mark Caesar, a free Black man of Charles County, Maryland, was tried in 1845 as an "accomplice of slave flight" for his part in the Port Tobacco mass escape, in which a large armed group of freedom seekers set out for the north before being surrounded near Rockville. Maryland State Archives researchers found him documented in the Maryland Penitentiary prisoners' record of 1850.
