Biography
Keith Gartenlaub was a senior engineer with Boeing who was targeted by the FBI in a Chinese espionage investigation due to frequent travels to China to visit his parents-in-law. The investigation was started because an FBI agent read an article from Wired magazine about the debut of new Chinese military transport plane where the author speculated, "Beijing may also have acquired some of the C-17's blueprints from a spy working at Boeing." The FBI secretly followed Gartenlaub for 21-month and tapped his emails and phone calls. They found no proof of espionage but FBI agents broke into his home and secretly copied his computer hard drive. The FBI then approached Gartenlaub and claimed they had found child pornography on his computer but agreed not to arrest him for it if he became an informant. Gartenlaub refused and was arrested. Computer forensics showed that none of the files allegedly found on his computer had ever been opened and Gartenlaub asserts the FBI planted the files.
