Biography

Joseph Eash was a Mennonite conscientious objector from Illinois imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 10 years in prison. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: Spent 4 months & 15 days in camp, 3 months & 9 days in the guardhouse, & 3 months on farm furlough; refused to wear uniform & obey orders; was court-martialed in July 1918 & sentenced to 10 years in prison; sent to Ft.
