Biography

Jose Santiago was a Puerto Rican patriot and former Communist, a leader of the Provisional Organizing Committee to Reconstitute a Marxist-Leninist Party. In 1960, after years of deportation proceedings against his Canadian-born wife Jo Ann tied to his radical politics, Canada refused to admit him and the family was forced into exile in Cuba — what the Guardian called the first Puerto Rican family thus exiled from the U.S.
