Biography

Ferdinand Smith was a co-founder and national secretary of the National Maritime Union and the first Black member of the CIO executive council. Purged as a left-winger in 1948, he was forced out of the United States around 1951 under deportation proceedings as an 'undesirable' and 'subversive,' and died in Jamaica on Aug. 15, 1961.
