Biography
José Felan was a Black Lives Matter protestor who was arrested on May 28th, 2020 in relation to fires set during the George Floyd Uprisings in the Twin Cities. While no one was harmed, police in Mexico arrested Felan and his wife Mena D. Yousif, 23, in February 2021. Yousif was pregnant at the time the couple went to Mexico, later giving birth in the country, and upon arrest, the authorities seized custody of their child. On October 18, 2022, Felan was sentenced by Judge Doty to 6.5 years with 3 years of supervised release. Restitution was set at $39,028 to be split with co-defendant Mohamad Abdi.
He has requested letters and books to help keep his spirits up while incarcerated. "Your support is tremendous to me right now. Even one letter from you can make all the difference...I love reading non-fiction books, especially about history. I am trilingual and love learning," he writes. Books must be new, soft cover and from a publisher/vendor only. Books received from any other source will be considered contraband and will be placed in the inmate’s property.
