Biography
John Taylor was the third President of the LDS Church (1880-1887) and a survivor of the Carthage Jail attack that killed Joseph Smith in 1844. After the Edmunds Act of 1882 made unlawful cohabitation a federal crime, Taylor refused to renounce plural marriage and on February 1, 1885 went on the "underground" rather than appear in court. He spent the last two and a half years of his life in seclusion in homes around Utah while U.S. deputy marshals hunted him; he died in hiding at the Roueche home in Kaysville, Utah on July 25, 1887. Although never formally incarcerated, Taylor's exile under federal warrants makes him the most prominent fugitive of the polygamy prosecutions.
