Biography

John R. Washington was a San Francisco minister, born about 1928 in Pittsburgh and was arrested with eight others at the Jackson Municipal Airport on July 21, 1961 — one of the arrests recorded by the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission and preserved in the Civil Rights Digital Library. The catalog establishes the arrest, the participation, and the individually identified police photograph, but not the court disposition, any transfer to Parchman, or the physical release date; those fields are unresolved pending county-jail, court, or penitentiary records.

The Civil Rights Digital Library holds two identified images of him: the 1961 Sovereignty Commission identification photograph used here, and a later professional portrait in the Cleveland Call and Post collection.
