Biography

John Cyril Hellman was a Montana Communist and former state director of the Progressive Party, arrested by FBI agents at dawn in Butte in April 1956 under the Smith Act's membership clause. The federal judge in his case, William Murray, publicly rebuked J. Edgar Hoover for the FBI's 'un-American, unfair tactics' in issuing pre-trial press statements.
