Biography
Revolutionary War major (4th Pennsylvania Battalion) and Mingo Creek militia commander during the Whiskey Rebellion. Led the rebel force of roughly 600 western Pennsylvania farmers that besieged federal tax inspector John Neville's fortified home at Bower Hill on July 17, 1794. Killed by a Neville-side sniper during a parley flag; his death enraged the rebels, who then burned Bower Hill, and was the proximate trigger for Washington's federalization of 13,000 militia and the Insurrection Act invocation that crushed the rebellion. Martyred at age 43.
