Biography

J. C. Robinson was a Los Angeles member of the Industrial Workers of the World, prosecuted under California's Criminal Syndicalism Act during the state's campaign to break IWW organizing. He and several co-defendants were convicted on July 11, 1923, and he was held at San Quentin as prisoner 38127. The Industrial Worker of August 6, 1924 lists him among the imprisoned and gives his birthday as August 19; no birth year is recorded. An appellate court afterwards reversed his conviction, and by March 4, 1925 he had been ordered released. The day he was arrested, the day he entered San Quentin and the day he actually walked out are all unresolved, so no time-served figure is published for him.

Case

San Quentin State Prison
Charges: Criminal syndicalism (California Criminal Syndicalism Act) — one of a group of IWW members prosecuted at Los Angeles.
Sentenced: Jul 11, 1923
Incarcerated: 1923
Sentence: Convicted of criminal syndicalism at Los Angeles on July 11, 1923 with several co-defendants, and imprisoned at San Quentin as number 38127. The conviction was afterwards reversed, and he had been ordered released by March 4, 1925. The conviction date is stored in the sentenced-date column, there being no separate column for it. The year of admission to San Quentin is held at year precision because the day is unknown, and no release date is entered at all: an order to release is not a discharge, and the day he actually left is unresolved. The record therefore publishes no time-served figure rather than measuring the distance between two guesses. This row previously described a federal prosecution under the Espionage and Sedition Acts, which was an import-wide default rather than anything specific to him. It was a state prosecution.
Convicted: Yes — conviction later reversed on appeal
