Biography

Herbert J. Phillips was a former University of Washington philosophy professor — one of the first scholars fired in the postwar loyalty purges. As a witness in the Seattle Smith Act trial he refused to name colleagues in the Communist Party and was cited for contempt, facing three years; the Ninth Circuit reversed the citation in 1958, putting him 'out of jeopardy.'
