Biography

Henry J. Becker was a Mennonite conscientious objector from Oklahoma imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 25 yrs. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: sent to Camp Travis in Sept. 1917 & assigned to 57th Co., 165th Depot Brigade; wore the uniform; was in artillery for first 4-5 months; after 2 months was selected to go to Officers’ Training School, but he asked to quit after 2 weeks; then entered depot brigade; company barber; …
