Biography

Bernhard E. Fast was a Mennonite conscientious objector from Oklahoma imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 40 years, reduced to 10 years. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: sent to Camp Greenleaf; refused to drill on Oct. 7, 1918; on Oct. 26th was sentenced to 40 years, reduced to 10 years; imprisoned at Ft.
