Biography
Harold Studley Gray of Detroit was a Christian absolutist whose pacifism crystallized while doing YMCA work in a German prisoner-of-war camp. Charged with disobeying orders at Camp Custer and Leavenworth, he was sentenced to twenty-five years (reduced to three), arriving at Fort Leavenworth on July 18, 1918 and later held at Alcatraz. His sentence was remitted on August 19, 1919. His letters were published as the memoir "Character Bad: The Story of a Conscientious Objector."
