Biography
H. E. Herd, from Moscow, Idaho, received a four- to ten-year sentence on April 15, 1918, for violating the state's Criminal Syndicalism Act. He was arrested in July 1917 during a lumber workers strike in northwest Idaho and began serving the sentence on April 15, 1918. In 1924, after seven years in prison, Herd's health was reported to be "declining on account of ill treatment" and "unsanitary conditions" in the Boise jail.
