Biography
George E. Shibley was a California labor and civil-liberties attorney who, after a jury acquitted him of contempt of a military court and of a related felony, was convicted of 'summary contempt' and sentenced to three years and disbarment for his vigorous defense of an enlisted Marine. Supporters said the prosecution, ordered from Washington, was meant solely to punish a civilian lawyer; his case was on appeal to the Supreme Court.
