Biography
Gail S. Phares is a former Maryknoll lay missioner who served in Nicaragua and Guatemala in the 1960s and is a co-founder of Witness for Peace, the U.S. solidarity organization that placed thousands of Americans into Nicaraguan war zones during the 1980s Contra war as nonviolent witnesses. She has been arrested repeatedly for SOA Watch line-crossings at Fort Benning and has served multiple short federal sentences. She founded the Carolina Interfaith Task Force on Central America in Raleigh, North Carolina.
